John Jacques spoke to Diabetes Jersey chairman Brian Le Marquand ahead of the walk

Hundreds of walkers braved this morning's wet weather to raise funds for Diabetes Jersey. The fund-raising effort comes against a backdrop of an increasing number of people with the condition locally - curently around 4,000 cases.

Some of the cash raised today will go towards supporting the Island's diabetes centre through sponsorship of a specialist diabetic Sister at a cost of £165,000 over a period of 3 years.

The charity also funds a £25,000 a year screening programme to make early diagnosis of diabetes for the 1500 people in Jersey who do not realise that they have the condition.

Well done to all the walkers. I was stewarding the course and you had to put up with some terrible conditions in St Peter's Valley but most of you battled on with a smile on your face and relished the challenge.
