Jersey's famous for its cows, its potatoes and ...it's vodka? Well maybe not yet, but that's what the Economic Development Department are hoping.
They've given an undisclosed amount of money to a producer in the island to start making vodka. If they're successful it will then be sold commercially.
Vodka production has been tried before in 2004 - but it fell through when the producers couldn't find a suitable site. Despite that, the Assistant Economic Development Minister is still optomistic about the venture.
Constable Len Norman said: "What is being done at the moment is they're trialling to see if it's possible to do it - to produce good quality vodka with the Jersey Royal Potatoes and then if that is possible to see what the production would be needed what marketing would be needed to see if it's successful and if it is successful then who knows?"

This is nothing but a fanciful indulgence. If our government is putting public money into a private enterprise they should have the courage of their convictions to disclose how much. A great advert for transparency of government. If this is true, it is an "absolut" disgrace!

Well its a good job we don't have a 'drink problem' on the Island!
Pot kettle black anyone?
'Undisclosed amount?' and to an unnamed producer?
