Gas prices rise

The cost of gas in Jersey is going up next week.

The 5% rise will add around £70 to the annual cost of heating a house.

Prices will be increased by 0.58p a unit with effect from 10 May.

Gas boss John Davies says the rise follows a further global increases in wholesale energy prices and he has warned that propane prices will remain high for the foreseeable future.

Why didn't the states support a natural gas pipeline like Jersey Gas sister company in the Isle of man, 7p per unit for gas? Oh.... I will tell you why, the States owns the majority share in the JEC. Once Jersey Gas have been put out of business, watch the electric price rise! You have been warned !!

Be careful what you wish for! Jersey Electricity is majority owned by the states. Jersey Gas are a private company, who don't have the states to support them. Look around the world at global energy prices, crude oil has been over 100 dollars for over a year, and it doesn't look like its coming down soon. Sure as 'eggs are eggs' once the JEC have a captive market and Jersey Gas are no more, watch the price of electric then!! Heat pumps sound good, however do your research and look at the problems worldwide with them. Even the Energy Savings Trust have problems recommending them. We need multi fuels on this island, just remember the French have the switch to turn off our lights. It would be madness to rely on one fuel. Also, remember what one of the oil companies said about Guernsey, "the island uses as much fuel as a M1 service station", they could pull the plug tomorrow and it wouldn't bother them!!

@ChrisThe prices are going up everywhere, not just in Jersey. The problem in Jersey is that nobody thinks about the future and isn't educated when it comes to insulation, heating etc. I lived in Jersey and was shocked when it came to housing standards. Electric heating will just get more expensive over the years too, unless you use heat pumps.I don't know how long you're planning to stay in Jersey, or have the space, but heat pumps or solar energy are the long term solution. The most effective way is proper insulation and quality windows. When it comes to insulation, Germany is a great example where you get quality for money and encourage more solar energy. I don't know how it is in Jersey but in Ireland we get grants for insulation

We recently bought a house and have never had gas before. Never Again! The gas heating was switched off as soon as we received our first invoice in February/March, as the charges were over 5 times more expensive than electric charges were in our old house (and the gas doesn't include the hot water, just central heating which only came on twice a day). It's been far cheaper to buy electric heaters to plug in the wall and use them instead! As soon as we can afford it we will definitely be switching to electric heating. Until then the 3 children (5, 2 and 10 weeks) will be wearing lots of jumpers when cold! Shame on you Jersey Gas and shame on you John Davies, you are employed to make money, and that's exactly what you are doing!! Don't insult us by using the "global increases" excuse!

Well, last autumn we toyed with the idea of switching from gas heating to infra-red electric and having just had an eye watering heating bill over the winter I think it's a given that we will switch. Additionally their customer service is beyond appaling so sorry - they can count on me not lining their pockets any more.

This is outrageous! This company is bleeding us all dry of money. There is a huge recession going on and this is the very last thing we need. Thanks a bunch! And as usual no help whatsoever from the States of Jersey!

I currently have Gas central heating and a gas hob. The boiler needs replacing and I,m going to do all I can to ensure its a conversion to another form, electric or whatever. Our gas bills are astronomoical and when prices dropped in the UK they stayed the same in Jersey. Does anyone actually know what Jersey Gas profits are? (not Blue Diamond Group, jsy. gas as a standalone company)
