Laws in Jersey don't stand up to new Human Rights legislation according to Deputy Bob Hill.
The St Martin representative says islanders are being fooled into believing laws comply with European standards, but in reality they don't.
He says something needs to be done before islanders are caught out.

The Sharp Report from the 90's yawn, Stuart Syvret yawn. The Chief of Police, yawn. When are you people going to get lives? The Chapman Report said it all.
Back to topic. Human Rights Law is over due and fair play to Deputy Bob Hill.

For many people, the various blog sites are the only source of information on some of the topics the "acedited" media seem to shy away from.
Research the media coverage of the Sharp Report into child abuse at Victoria College or more recently The Police Chiefs documentary evidence of foul play within our states and civil service - largely un-reported by our "acredited media" Consider too that the recent Chapman report which labelled Syvret a bully suggested that the States employment board should issue robust rebuttle of te alegations against civil servants - the result - a deeafening silence - why? perhaps Syvret does have good evidence....it's time for the States Employment Board to do as they say i.e Put up or shut up!

Ridiculous. The law draftsmen over here review all the new legislation to ensure it is "yuman rites" compliant and then certify to say it's been done. Bob Hill's amendment does nothing to add clarity, it just adds another layer of bureaucracy.

It is about time, and lets hope the legislation will also cover the human rights of people who are being tried by kangaroo court on local blogs in the preposterous name of so called ‘citizens media’.

I am disturbed by the deputy's comments. The European Convention on Human Rights is not complex in concept. To suggest that a politician responsible for voting whether or not laws are enacted needs to be spoon-fed how and why a given piece of legislation is (or is not) human rights compliant is ridiculous. If he took the time to learn, digest and comprehend even the basics regarding Human Rights legislation he would be able to rationalise when and how it applies to other laws. If he really is that ignorant about how the principles of ECHR underpin new legislation he doesn't deserve the mandate he has been given.

God help us if he gets this
These are the laws in the uk that give criminals more rights than victims. These are the rules that stopped the UK police issuing pictures of escaped prisoners as it was againts thier human rights.
These are also the laws the Tories want to amend if they win the election. Yet this Deputy is so PC he wants them on our islands when the aren't needed at all.
Can he give one real true example of when we needed these laws and they would have righted a wrong under our present laws?
