The department responsible for Guernsey's bus service could face a vote of no confidence over the hike in fares.

From Sunday, passengers will now pay £1 per journey, an increase of 40 pence.

What this increase in bus fares will do is transfer £400,000 of the subsidy that's currently paid by tax payers to the bus service, on to the passengers.

The move is getting some islanders hot under the collar because we're supposed to have cheap bus fares as part of a wider traffic strategy designed to encourage people out of their cars and on to alternative forms of transport.

What's your view? Should bus fares be increased?
Will a rise in the cost of travel push you back into your car? Whatever your point of view, do let us know below. We'll publish your comment here and it may be read out in Channel Report.

Leave the prices as they are. This move sends out the message that the Environment Dept hasn't got a traffic and transport strategy. A totally retrograde step at a time when the island's roads are blighted by too much car use.

I really don't think that £1 for, what could be quite a long journey, is too much to pay. It certainly would not put my family off using the bus.

I think that the fares should not go up until there has been a review of the departments road transport strategy by the states. An extra 40p a journey is silly, lets hope the taxi drivers do not push for the same percentage rise in their fares!!!

I do not see what the whole fuss is about increasing the bus fares from 60p to £1. In Jersey they are £1.60 - try paying that twice a day just to get to and from work - I say Guernsey are rather lucky regardless of the increase or not

If the service improves this is good. Prices of fuel have gone up. I do find the buses very cheap and plastic they rattle over anything other than velvet and island coachways would benerfit from more coverage, smaller more refined buses. Then if the price is higher then so be it at least it will be respectable I would pay extra for a quality service but I will take the car rather than go on it now.
