Wednesday 10th March marks National No Smoking Day and Guernsey Quitline is helping islanders who want to 'break free' from the habit.
The organisation wants to encourage smokers to make a a long term change.
Quitline says stubbing out the habit requires commitment and planning but support is available and the benefits are life changing. They've issued the following statistics and advice:
Break Free from the cost
- In just a week a 20 a day smoker can save nearly £35 and up to £1,500 in a year which could be used for essentials or special treats.
Break Free from the chemicals in the tobacco smoke
- After 20 minutes smokers blood pressure and pulse return to normal
- After 24 hours carbon monoxide and nicotine is eliminated from the body
- After 48 hours the sense of taste and smell is greatly improved
- After 72 hours their breathing becomes easier and energy levels increase
- After three to six months any coughs and wheezing and breathing problems improve.
Helping smokers to Break Free
- Set a date - No Smoking Day on the 10th March 2010 is a good time to stop with millions of other people
- Get help from Guernsey Quitline on 233170.
- Make a list of the reasons why you want to stop smoking - to be fitter, for your children or to save money; carry the list to remind you during difficult moments
- Tell friends and family
- Reward yourselves with treats
- Change your routine
- Include more exercise in the day
- Drink plenty of water
- Eat more fruit and vegetables
- Think positively - the withdrawal symptoms are a sign that their body is recovering from the effects of tobacco

I hope to see many people take this oppertunity to stop this habit for good.
One day I can see this being very much a habit of the past and with good reason to.
I think that tax on smoking is too low and if they cost more it might stop people especially young people from killing themself slowly.
