Hundreds of islanders opposed to plans for a waste plant in Guernsey took to the streets this weekend.

They marched from the Salerie Corner to the site of the proposed plant at Longue Hougue.

And they continued with their campaign this morning, when they handed over a petition to Deputy Dave Jones.

More than three thousand islanders signed the petition, calling for deputies to 'Say No' to the Public Services Department's preferred waste solution. They want the House to support Deputy Jones' sursis to delay the debate until early next year.

PSD Report Abuse
Posted By: Anthony Durbin on 04-Aug-2009
The PSD were offered more than one far more suitable waste processing plants for Guernsey from highly reputable companies. These were ignored by the consultantsand civil servants who are prejudiced in favour of mass burn incineration. Instead of moving with the times - the PSD have taken a gigantic leap backward. The altenative well proven technology reclaims all useful materials from the solid waste stream; comprising glass(reduced to powder) metals (compacted and baled for export) plastics(all types reduced to granules for export) textiles (removed and baled or converted to fuel) electrical goods (shredded and reduced for off-island disposal) paper,card,bio-waste (shredded and pelletised for bio-fuel) greenwaste/farmwaste/horticulture waste (aerobically treated and then converted to bio-fuel) woodwaste (shredded and added to bio-fuel) hardcore and other inert waste reduced to useable aggregate The eco-friendly, bio fuel is then combusted in a fully Climate Change emissions compliant on-site, multi-megawatt combined heat and power boiler system with emission control gas scrubbers and fly-ash capture facility. The electrical output from the steam turbine powers all of the machinery - and the exhaust provides steam for a vacuum vapour seawater desalination plant to produce about 500 tons od potable water per day.Surplus power generation is 24/7 and can be fed into the local grid. The plant is fully automatic and designed to take all household/commercial waste without any need for pre-sort An early version of the technology has worked on the Isle of Wight now for more than 20 years and has a new, multi-megawatt electricity generating power station buring fuel made in the plant. A newer version of the overall technology would be 100% suitable for Guernsey - for a saving of more than £30 MILLION on the cost of the PSD preferred Suez Environment incinerator - that is grossly overpriced at £93.5Million ( strangely, that's exactly the same price that CNIM ( the other French incinerator company ) quoted for the Jersey incinerator. All very fishy......... I have deliberately left our contractor names out of this. Sufficient to say they have been building waste to energy plants - both resource recovery, incinerator and bio-mass combustion now for more than 75 years.
