A heritage pressure group says Jersey's old Odeon cinema must be saved for future generations.
The owners have unveiled plans to demolish the buiolding as part of a £40m revamp of the area.
But 'Save Jersey's Heritage' says it's an important building and has urged Planning minister Freddie Cohen not to de-list it.
At the moment, because it's a protected building, the owners can't alter either the inside or outside of it without permission from Planning.
Le Masurier, one of Jersey's largest private landowners, want to turn the run-down area of Bath Street into cafes, bars and restaurants as well as creating 70,000 square feet of commercial space, car parking and new homes.

Knock it down it is now an eyesore with no aesthetic merit whatsoever.
As someone else has said, let Asda, Sainsburys, Tesco redevelope the site and THAT is something that would bring a great deal of pleasure to th people of Jersey. But there again the vested interests of Jersey wouldn't like that.

2 points I would like to raise. 1 - Does the new build have to be so "modern" (glass and metal) in look? Can't it be stylsh and more in keeping with the older bulidings in the area? and 2 -Perhaps, like other developers the Clarke family could offer £1Million or 2 towards the development of the Town Park as part of the "giving something back" scheme.

It is a horrible looking building that blocks out the light and would be very tricky to redevelop in its existing form.
Had some quirky features inside but best redeveloped - yes its listed but really does anyone make it the highlight of a trip to St. Helier?

A more pertinent point would be to ask how much it would cost to remediate a building which is full of asbestos. And more importantly what about all the people who sat watching films in there. Knock it down. It was a building of its time and we cannot continue to live in the past.

The listing is a problem, but the scheme does look good. The Forums gone, why not the Odeon.
Think it worth it, the proposal would bring so much improvement to this drap area.

What is the point of having listed buildings, if the States with their me, me, me attitude can just delist a building to suit themselves

I believe (from reading the information at www.lmbathstreet.je) that this is proposed to be alongside the Town Park, and not as commented above, an alternative to it.
It's my opinion that this would definitely be a welcome addition to the area if passed, and would balance out the move toward the waterfront, and hopefully regenerated an area with some lovely architecture.

Living close to the area I would argue that they should knock this monstrosity down and build flats or even better still make it into a multi-story carpark. This area of town is in so much need of development because it has remained the same for decades.

This has always been a scruffy area of town so maybe a change will puck it up a bit. I also agree that it would be better than this stupid Town Park.

I'm intrigued to know what the special interest of the Odeon site is other than it being an old (ugly) cinema?
Is that interesting? Why don't we make it into a museum that no one will ever go to? Or just board it up and not use it for anything... oh wait
